French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj plunges the audience into the world of Chinese tale and reveals the “supernatural” power of the art of painting. Without literally telling the story, he creates its contemporary adaptation preserving meanwhile the essence and the symbolism of the ancient fairytale.
After L’Anoure in 1995, Snow White in 2008 and Siddharta in 2010, Angelin Preljocaj is continuing his exploration of fairy tales by choosing a direction so far unexplored in his work, that of the traditional poetic tales of Asia. The choreographer unique style combines classical ballet technique with an expressionistic plasticity of contemporary dance, adding the elements of the archaic and far-Eastern body culture.
Angelin Preljocaj about performance: “La Fresque (The painting on the wall), inspired by the famous eponymous Chinese story, tells us about this journey into another dimension where the picture becomes a place of transcendence and physical being enters into a relationship with the picture. The ballet seeks to explore the mysterious relations between representation and reality, sites at which the dance creates the bonds that link the fixed image and movement, instantaneity and duration, the life and the inert. This metaphor running through the Chinese tale raises the question of representation in our civilization. It speaks to us of the place of art in today’s society”.
“La Fresque has a dark beauty, it is a masterly mise-en-abyme of the hypnotic power of images”.
“The dancers are supported by a magnificent staging: mysterious swirls of light lick the stage, now evoking
a dragon, now a sea, a starry sky, the trace of a brush or a tress of hair. The choreography once again reveals Angelin Preljocaj’s liking for pas de deux, and for bodies folding like origami. The pleasure of the interpreters is apparent and contagious”.
“There are breath-taking scenes and delicately sensual duets, which lead us into a dream of the Arabian Nights and of Chinese shadows. The well-managed metaphor reveals an imagination with a fine poetic force”.
