The play of Bertolt Brecht “The Good Person of Szechwan” has become hieratic for theatrical world. Russian people associate it with the legendary performance produced by Yuriy Lyubimov from Taganka Theatre half a century ago. But in production of Yuriy Butusov (one of the leading directors of Russia and Europe) the play has got an absolutely new sound. The play is about a city with poor and embittered citizens among whom there is only one good person – prostitute Shen Teh but she can’t cope with public pressure. Butusov transformed the play into a philosophical parable about the world which lost its set of coordinates, where “good” has to turn into its direct contrary to survive.
The play is performed with the music of Paul Dessau played by leading singers of ensemble “Pure music” led by Igor Gorsky. The play got a new translation specially for Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre. Moreover actors sing ballades (songs in Brecht’s “epical theatre” performed as interludes or narrations) alive.
The performance was honored with Stanislavsky Award as “Event of the season”. “The Good Person of Szechwan” is nominated in five categories of the main Russian theatre award “The Golden mask” (season 2012-2013).
“In his performances Butusov breaks free an outcry of human despair, energy of a being who understands that it is necessary and at the same time impossible to change the sequence of events, as well as not to scream about it”.
Marina Tokareva, newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”
“… you leave the theatre bewildered, amazed by notorious catharsis, but happy because our theatre is still capable of such breakthroughs”.
