The Board of Trustees of Platonov Arts festival held a meeting in the small hall of the Voronezh region government on 31st March. Having discussed the work being done in preparation for the festival and defined the amount of sponsorship and volunteer support required, the Board members had an opportunity to contemplate a recently manufactured sample of the Platonov Award lapel pin.
The necessity of such a token of recognition was voiced at one of Platonov Award Council meetings. International Platonov Arts festival directorate was in charge of realizing this idea.
A competition for the best design project of the Platonov Award commemorative token was announced in November. In February, the Platonov Award Council members considered the applications and shortlisted five finalists. A work by Vladimir Mikheev, a well-known artist from Voronezh, was voted the winner. Subsequently, the festival directorate had the sample of the Platonov Award lapel pin manufactured. By the end of March, we obtained an art jewelry piece, which will be awarded on all Platonov Award laureates from now onwards.
The lapel pin is made of gold and looks like a square frame with a multi-faceted rock crystal inside ensconced within interwoven dark threads.
According to the author, the lapel pin reflects both Andrey Platonov’s esthetics and the Platonov Award concept. The gold frame symbolizes recognition of the laureate’s creative achievements as well as significance and value of the award itself; the fine interwoven threads of carbonized gold represent the depth of Andrey Platonov’s artistic imagery, the complexity and poignancy of the creative process; the crystal signifies the purity and light, which his personality and works radiate.
As mentioned before, since 2015 the Platonov Award has been raised to 1 million rubles, the corresponding certificate and the lapel pin will be presented to the fifth Platonov Award laureate in June – the festival running time.
All the previous years’ Platonov Award laureates - Boris Ekimov, Lev Dodin, Mikhail Pletnev, Aleksandr Petrov – have also been invited to the V Platonov Arts festival, where they will be awarded the lapel pins as well.
