Mikhailovsky Theatre will present ballets by Nacho Duato at the 3d Platonov Festival

"Nunc Dimittis"

Mikhailovsky Theatre (St. Petersburg) - one of the most renowned musical theaters in Europe, the ballet and the opera productions of which represent the best achievements of Russian art, will take part in the Third International Platonov Arts Festival.  On June 10th and 11th the celebrated dance troupe will demonstrate three one-act ballets by Nacho Duato: «Nunc Dimittis», «Without Words» and «Duende» on the stage of the Voronezh State Opera and Ballet Theatre.

For 20 years, the famous choreographer Nacho Duato had been the head of the National Dance Theatre of Spain (Compañía  Nacional de Danza), and in 2011 he became the artistic director of Mikhailovsky Theatre ballet company. Duato’s choreographic works are performed by major ballet theaters of the world: American Ballet Theatre, Nederlands Dans Theater, Deutsche Oper Berlin, The Finnish National Opera, Stuttgart Ballet, The Australian Ballet, and others.

Duato's choreography is almost always dictated by the music: for the ballet, "Without Words" he has chosen songs by Schubert, «Nunc Dimittis» set to music by Arvo Pärt, and for "Duende" (which was nominated for the "Golden Mask" as the best ballet performance) he drew inspiration from the works by Claude Debussy.

The premiere of "Duende" was held twenty years ago, when Nacho Duato quit Netherlands Dance Theatre directed by Jiří Kylián.  "Without Words" was created for the famous troupe of American Ballet Theatre. Both these pieces, as critics defined "are in the status of masterpieces," and «Nunc Dimittis» became the first work created especially for Mikhailovsky Theatre ballet troupe.

At the first Platonov festival Voronezh audience had already had the chance to watch one-act ballet by Nacho Duato - «Por vos muero» («For you I accept death») was a part of the performance "Masterpieces of modern dance" of Musical Theatre named after K.S. Stanislavsky and Vl.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko. This time the famous Spanish choreographer will visit Voronezh personally.
